About Harmonious Living
How We Work
We work to make the process as seamless and enjoyable as possible for the homeowner. In order to help keep the process on track, we have developed a system for the way that we run the business side of projects. The process is broken out into four stages: Consultation, Presentation, Project Management and Installation.
Consultation
We have an initial meeting with the client in order to listen to what the homeowner is looking to achieve in the project. During this meeting, we look at the design space(s) and ask numerous questions about how the homeowner lives and how they would like to see the space function. At this time, we are open to hearing all ideas for the space as well as what hasn’t worked and why. We also ask about timing and budget for the project so that any items presented are within these parameters.
We then go away and write a proposal that outlines the specific needs and details for the project. This document also outlines the timing, budget for the project, as well as the Design Fee to be charged for the development of the plan. Once this plan is approved, the project may begin. We take this interim step (which differs from most firms) in order to ensure that we are all on the same page from the beginning. This detailed communication will continue throughout the project.
Once the proposal is approved, we get to work to develop the plan. We spend time within the home working to ensure that the design is as complete as possible at the presentation stage. If there is any question as to the taste or look related to the goal for the project. This step again helps to ensure that the plan is in keeping with the homeowner’s wants for the project.
Presentation
The design presentation usually takes place within two weeks of the second home visit. The presentation can take place in the client’s home or in our studio. At this time, we present the specific recommendations for the project, including the color schemes, paint, fabrics finishings, furnishings, drapery treatment and any custom pieces needed for the job. Floor plans are typically presented in order to review the space plan and specific furniture to be used in the space. At any point in the process, if the homeowner does not like or is unsure of a piece of furniture, fabric or treatment recommended, an alternative will be presented and agreed upon.
Once this process is complete, a spreadsheet is presented outlining each item specified for the project. Once the items and budget are approved and the deposits are invoiced, the ordering will begin.
Project Management
Throughout the ordering and production process, each project is monitored to ensure that every item will arrive as specified. In the event of any backordered items or problem, the homeowner is alerted immediately and the designer and client discuss any necessary changes or modifications. Other than being available for questions, this is the time for the client to sit back an allow us to handle all of the numerous details and make it all happen.
Installation
During the ordering process, all of the interior finishings such as paint, wallpaper and any renovation work take place. That way, by the time all of the furniture and drapery pieces arrive, the home should be ready for the installation. We arrange for a day or days to come in and transform the home with the new items. While all of the already-specified items come into the home at that time, it is also a time for the designer to bring in those additional special items that are needed to complete the space. All additional items are brought in "on approval" basis so that the homeowner can have time to live with the finishing touches to see how they complete the room. An inventory sheet with pricing for any additional items, like accessories and lamps, is left for approval. We are available to discuss any questions about the details of the solution in order to ensure that all items are exactly what the client wants for the given space.
We have found that this system works very well for both the homeowner and designer. In fact, it helps to streamline the process and avoid surprises and stresses along the way. And, by working within the framework outlined, the team is able to stay focused on not only the overall vision of the project, but also each detail needed to complete it well and on time.
